Have had Chessmaster 10th edition for about a year now and really enjoy it, but it #$%%#@ freezes all the time during a rated game!! It won't let me move my piece, but my clock runs in the background. When I finally can move the piece, two minutes have gone by! I've lost a bunch ...

Approximately how many openings are there in chess? This would include the various subcategories of the major openings. A friend asked me that question and I hesitated to even guess. Can anyone in the vast chess audience answer this?

Where is the best online place for me to play strong opponents? I am currently 1700-1800 on FICS (standard games, not blitz or lightning). I guess it would be good for me to play guys in the 2000+ range? I don't know what 1700-1800 on FICS is in FIDE terms.

I've noticed in several games on playchess.com, my opponent's lag seems to increase greatly toward the end of the game, especially when time is critical and the position tense. Is it possible to manipulate lag in some way so as to, effectively, gain extra time? Or is this
