selling chess books?31 May 2006 16:35 GMT3
Hi.  I occasionally post chess books on ebay.  Would it be okay if I
were to post a link here?  I don't want to be obnoxious, but I thought
some of you might be interested, so I thought I'd ask first.
Thanks!
If Parr were editor....31 May 2006 13:33 GMT62
WHAT WOULD PARR DO?
>It would be interesting to see what Larry Parr, former CL
editor and a good one, would have to say about this
exchange. I know that he is confident that Evans would do

Cleaning old wooden chess set30 May 2006 20:25 GMT6
I have an old wooden chess set (circa 1940s?). I think its made out of pine
or boxwood. It came with a small chess rule book done by W.B. Tattersall.
Ltd.
Its unpainted and the "white" wooden chess pieces are a bit dirty from use-

More Brits, killed in Gulf..30 May 2006 16:21 GMT1
Gruppens,
It is my sad duty to report more Britischer troops have been killed by
the so called 'friendly-fire' in Gulf War 1 by rampaging, out of control
PC yuppie American troops than had before been thought credible. This
[Newbie] Tempo Question30 May 2006 14:29 GMT4
I'm learning about time in chess, and I've come across an example which has
confused me.  I'd like to resolve this confusion quickly, since until I
have, I don't want to continue reading the book, and I'd like to finish the
book soon.  So any thoughts will be appreciated!
Topalov!30 May 2006 14:18 GMT9
Is this guy on fire or what!  Now it says on chessbase that the match
between Kramnik and Topalov may be off, or tentative whatever that
means. Sounds like Kramnik is getting nervous.  However for Topalov to
even consider an alternative match other than with Kramnik ( though
Registered Designs for Chessmen30 May 2006 04:07 GMT14
Today, while visiting The National Archives, I spent a little time browsing
old designs for chessmen.  In the 1840's designs had to be registered at an
office at 108 Fleet Street - a bit like taking out a patent.
The most important is "Ornamental design for a set of chess men ... ",

they mean "variable"] with parameter)"?
Looking for result29 May 2006 18:49 GMT5
between Olly and Pollock, New York 1893. I believe the game was played
in the eighth round of that event, with Olly having the white pieces.
I haven't been able to find this one!
Thanks much,
Olympiad Board Order29 May 2006 16:54 GMT3
A report from the Olympiad the other day mentioned that some country,
knowing they faced superior opposition and fearing a total whitewash, moved
their top player to the number 4 board in hopes of salvaging one win.  Does
anyone here know how the board order is controlled?  Would ...
Relativity and the Result of a Game29 May 2006 12:03 GMT20
AIUI according to the rules of chess
1) if you mate then that ends the game
2) if your opponent spots your flag has dropped that ends the game
1) takes precedence over 2) ie mate is one case where you don't have to
Phantom International Tournaments29 May 2006 11:41 GMT2
I have heard of them but now FIDE is aware of at least one. The purpose was
to get a GM title to a player who didn't deserve it.
One of those involved was GM Matos Damjanovic.
