Descriptive Notation

Thread view:
KD1IN - 22 Nov 2005 01:37 GMT
I have been looking for a Descriptive to Algebraic notation converter.  If
anyone knows of one and where to get it a post would be appreciated.

I have tried the FAQ but the links there seem to be dead.

I found one online version but I would like a stand alone.

I have found a few online but there links were dead too.

Thanks,

-Dale

http://www.chessbase.com/download/cblight/index.asp

ChessBase Light has the ability to convert from descriptive to algebraic.
Freeware, but need to register. If you don't want to, download it here:

Excellent! I have chessbase Light already.  What do I name the file and then
how do I open it?  I didn't see anything in the help file.

What file do you have?

Chess game readers all can read PGN and furthermore use different,
proprietary formats.

If you have plain text files only without PGN headers but with moves, copy
the moves (CTRL-C) and paste them (CTRL-V) into an open board window. Now do
the conversion.

What I am looking to do is exactly what this web site does:
http://alawi.csail.mit.edu/~alawi/chesstools/ednTOpgn.php
The problem I have with the web site is that it won't be there for long.  He
is a grad student and will be leaving sometime.

I want to be able to type in descriptive notation and output algebraic.
Either text or pgn, it doesn't matter.

 Thank you again,

-Dale

If you input a game in CB Light you can choose how to display notation:
short algebraic, long algebraic, descriptive. Simply input the moves and
save the game in a database.

You could E-mail him and ask for a copy of the code.

The code is avaliable on the site as part of a chess program.

I'm not much of a programmer though.

It is in C, C++ and Python.

It also uses a SWIG (www.swig.org) wrapper and my compiler doesn't like
that.

PS get to the code via http://alawi.csail.mit.edu/chess.php
and click on "the last chess engine I wrote".

I did contact him and he said he would see if he could make an executable
for me.
