Beat by a Computer on eBay Boy am I really pissed off. I have been trying to buy a particular edition of a book for a year. Finally I saw one listed on eBay. So, on July 8, 2008 I placed a most generous bid of $150.03 for the book. The book is Bobby Fischer's Games of Chess, published by Simon & Schuster. The auction was expiring just now, at Jul-15-08 15:57:30 PDT. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&item=320 272393065 Because I knew that there might be a last minute bid I was sitting here counting down the seconds until the auction was over. I kept hitting the refresh key. Finally, with just ten seconds remaining in the auction, someone outbid me. I rushed to place a higher bid but my computer is not that fast and just before I got my bid in the time was up. I am aware that there are computer programs to enable a bidder on eBay to place a bid just seconds before the time is up. That is obviously what this person did because it would be almost impossible for a human to time a bid so perfectly as to come in just ten seconds before the end. A normal human could never do that. The bidder is named bookforlove http://myworld.ebay.com/bookforlove/ He is probably sitting there laughing his a.s off that his computer program beat me by ten seconds. He probably does not even care about the book. He probably plans just to flip it to somebody. Meanwhile I really need that book. But I am going to get that guy. I am going to find out who bookforlove is. He thinks this is a big joke. I am not joking. He is no better than a chess player who uses a computer to cheat at chess. It could have been placed before yours and was likely much higher than the final bid. Hint - bid the maximum the item is worth to you (maximum bid = maximum price you are willing to pay less S/H), late in the auction (last few minutes is best or if a small fee is of little importance, subscribe to a sniping service). Especially if you value your time or there are several items closing. Exactly. That is Moe's Bookstore on Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley. I called them several times over a period of a month about this book and spoke to Lawrence there but I could not convince them to come down from their price of $225. Also, what they have is the British Edition. The one offered on Ebay was the American edition. I do not know what the difference is between the two books. Anyway, ebay can sometimes be a real bear; I "won" an auction a while back where the seller was rated about 2700 USCF equivalent, but he took me to the cleaners and I never got 'round to doing anything about it. Ninety-nine percent of his customers were happy as clams, while I expect I made up the other one percent. I sure wish I had "gotten" him-- by filing complaints and posting his due feedback. I did not see it right away because at 4:40 PM I had left my house to mail some books I had sold on ebay. The post office closes at 5:00 PM. I saw it when I came home at 11:00 PM. It says, "INV NOTICE: eBay Registration Suspension - User samhsloan@gmail.com is Linked to a Suspended User". I am trying to find out who the "suspended user" is. Just a few minutes before this happened, Rob ("The Robber") Mitchell, a long time antagonist, posted that he was going to complain to the Sheriff of Amherst County Virginia about my website. At the same time I complained about a book I had purchased on ebay for one cent from Bill Brock and I have not received the book yet. Someone in your household, someone who used your credit card, someone who used the same computer that you did -- take a look around and you'll find the suspended user. That has happened with some users, especially some who have had multiple accounts suspended, yet keep coming back with a new ID, new first name, etc. Be aware that if your wife, child, brother-in-law, grandfather who has used your address or your computer and been suspended, that connects you sufficiently to suspend you, too. Making threats of physical harm (or possibly so construed) against other eBay users is a Policy violation. <http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/rfe-unwelcome-email-threats.html> I wouldn't have read it that way, but perhaps someone did. Although there is some evidence that eBay employees monitor amoe, there's never been any indication that they've taken action against a user for merely complaining about eBay, or about some eBay user (when only vaguely identified). Where the postings are evidence of Policy violations, or actual libel, amoe visibility may hasten action. Posting Contact Info about other users in particular seems to awaken the CSRs. But you don't have to wait for the eBay amoe Squad to stumble onto it. The book the seller (played by Forrest Tucker) offering was printed using disappearing ink on the pages where the end moves were listed. The buyer (played by Larry Storch) intended to use Fischer's moves in a high stakes chess game to be held in a spooky castle in Romania against an international chess champion and renowned farrier for the Lippizaner stables (played by Vincent Price). Storch had bet the deed to the family pet cemetery on the outcome. At the last minute, Storch's girlfriend (played by Mickey Rooney in drag)(chess players don't exactly pull lookers, you know) discovered that Fischer was using the famous J.S. Sarratt end moves because the original notes had been written in onion juice and holding a match under the page revealed them. Storch won the match and used winnings to expand the family pet cemetery's revenue by adding a giant toilet bowl where owners of deceased goldfish could give them a fitting send- off. Unfortunately, Storch's character died at the end of the movie. He was standing on the side of the giant toilet bowl bragging about his victory and fell in and drowned.
